Accessing Electronic Resources with Assistive Technology

Cost: $50 (Certificate of Attendance and agenda will be furnished so you can apply for CEU’s within your discipline.) The availability of electronic materials for students with print disabilities continues to increase each year, offering numerous benefits to students who are visually impaired or blind. This workshop will identify where these materials can be located and explain the differences between the types of files that are available (Braille, DAISEY, TEXT). It will illustrate how students can use tools such as the BrailleNote, Braille Connect and Victor Reader Stream to access these materials. Participants will learn how to identify sources of electronic educational materials (Bookshare.org, RFB&D, National Library for the Blind, Audible.com, Guttenberg, and NIMAS) and increase their awareness of the various electronic file formats and the benefits to students with print difficulties.

From 4:30pm-7:00pm Families are invited for an evaluation, training, and test ride on the latest AmTryke Model. The fee to attend is $25. *Scholarships are available to qualifying families.
AmTrykes are modified bicyles that allow individuals who are unable to operate a traditional bike to enjoy the freedom and fun of riding a bicycle. AmTrykes are used to promote motor skills, strength, self-esteem and, of course, to have fun!

Creating Accessible Educational Materials for Students with Visual Impairments

This workshop will examine ways that technology from ViewPlus can be used to create accessible educational materials for students who are blind and visually impaired. Tiger Braille Printers and the Tiger Software Suite combine to provide dynamic ways to create accessible maps, charts and Braille documents. Attendees will learn more about creating these materials though demonstration and hands-on activities. Participants will learn how to:
1. Translate MS Word Documents to Braille documents using Tiger Software Suite.
2. Create a tactile map of KY using main stream technology and technology from ViewPlus.
3. Create a tactile chart using MS Excel and tools from ViewPlus.

Young Meeting House on Wendell Foster's Campus
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy pre-requisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, including attributes through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Particiapnts will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabiltiies, and/or limited communication skills.
